The Horned Frogs get demolished in Dallas, surrendering the Iron Skillet to the Mustangs
Embarrassment
Last week’s collapse vs. UCF was bad, and there have been plenty of rough moments over the last two seasons, but Saturday’s failure in University Park is the lowest point for TCU Football in multiple decades, certainly at least since any current Horned Frog has been alive. Undisciplined, unmotivated, unable to execute in any phase of the game, and ultimately getting absolutely dominated by your cross-metroplex rival. TCU entered the game among the worst in the nation in offensive rushing efficiency and it only got worse Saturday, as the Frogs averaged an abysmal 2.0 yards per carry. As well, TCU entered the game ranked outside the top-90 nationally in rushing yards allowed and the Mustangs fully took advantage, led by Brashard Smith’s 127 yards and 3 TDs, SMU ran for a total of 238 yards on 5.7 yards per carry.
If you had asked TCU fans before the game to describe the worst possible way for this game to go, surely none would have come up with anything as dastardly as Saturday’s outcome. five turnovers leading directly to 24 SMU points (representing the final margin), allowing a punt return TD, 14 penalties for 135 yards including consecutive unsportsmanlike penalties on Sonny Dykes to open the second half, leaving the Frogs to be led by Acting TCU Head Coach Kendal Briles. The defense was atrocious, the offense was hapless when it mattered, and the special teams coverage was running in concrete shoes. While the game had some positive moments, there are no silver linings, no hat tips or pats on the back; it was a full team ass-whooping with each player and coach to be held accountable.
Next: TCU will again be on the road, traveling to Kansas City to take on the 1-3 Kansas Jayhawks from Arrowhead Stadium on Saturday September 28.
