The former first-round pick turned in a career-best performance in week two.
Being a first-round draft pick comes with lofty expectations. After being the second receiver off the board in the 2023 draft, Quentin Johnston was expected to produce at a high level as soon as he hit the field. To make matters worse, Johnston’s first-round counterparts, Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Jordan Addison, and Zay Flowers, outpaced the LA Charger in receptions, yards, and touchdowns a season ago. Furthermore, later-round selections such as Puka Nacua, Rashee Rice, and Jayden Reed starred for the respective teams.
Entering 2024, Johnston was an afterthought. However, expecting Johnston to produce at an All-Rookie Team level was absurd. Although extremely talented, the former Horned Frog began week one of the 2023 season buried on the depth chart behind Keenan Allen, Mike Williams, and Joshua Palmer. Johnston didn’t record more than two catches until the end of October—and it took him nine games to find the endzone. Bust labels were thrown out, his skillset was questioned, and the once-lauded prospect was essentially written off after one season.
Although he stands taller than most receivers, the former TCU star is better with the ball in his hands as opposed to a deep threat or jump ball receiver. Johnston averaged more than 17.8 yards per reception every season as a Horned Frog and excelled running drags, crossing routes, and slants. To begin the season, it seems former Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh is putting Johnston in the best position to succeed. The 6-foot-4 receiver has become Justin Herbert’s favorite target. In week one, Johnston recorded three receptions for 38 yards. While modest, it was a glimpse into what Johnston has been working so hard to achieve.
Against the Carolina Panthers, Johnston caught two screens, two balls from crossing patterns, and a fade on the left side of the field. In all, the 23-year-old recorded five receptions for 51 yards and two touchdowns on only six targets. While it’s still early, Johnston has emerged as the Chargers’ most reliable receiver. The 23-year-old leads the team in receptions, yards, touchdowns, and targets.

Johnston’s performance against the Panthers was a career-best. Five receptions tied a career-high while two touchdowns were a personal best. Following a disappointing campaign a season ago, Johnston has come into his own. He’s gotten more comfortable with the Chargers offense and is hearing his praises from Herbert and Harbaugh. After an exciting week two performance from Johnston, there’s still plenty to come.
