It sure is nice to be back in the friendly confines of Schollmaier Arena. Sandwiched between two week-long road trips, TCU earned a pair of blowout victories at home this past week, slashing through two of the Big 12’s bottom-dwellers, defeating #86 Texas Tech by 21 and #84 BYU by 32. The Horned Frogs showed defensive might, major contribution from its bench depth, and the sharp-shooting firepower to run a team out of the gym. The wide margins impressed the metrics, again pushing the Frogs back up to #9 in the NET. While TCU has not fallen lower than 11th all season in the metric, it has been unable to climb beyond 8th since mid-December. The road trip to the Grand Canyon State could prove tricky, especially Sunday’s showdown vs. #59 Arizona, a Wildcats squad sitting 6-7 in the Big 12 with a major pelt on the wall, taking down West Virginia in Tucson. With the final 68-team bracket reveal just one month away, the NCAA Selection Committee’s initial Top-16 rankings will be announced Sunday February 16 at 11:00 AM on ABC. The Horned Frogs are certainly are in position to be included in that ranking and it will be interesting insight to see where the Committee values the TCU resume to-date. The best thing the Frogs can do to solidify its spot is to continue winning, but let’s take a look at the games nationally that may have impacted the race for one of these prized top-16 slots
Impact Game of the Week:
#36 Nebraska Cornhuskers def. #28 Maryland Terrapins – A massive result both for the Bubble race and the Top-4 seed race, returning the ‘Huskers into the field of 68 while bumping the Terps down to a 5-seed or worse. A 20-point road win is always going to move the needle, but when it comes against the AP #17 team, the result is a tidal wave to the metrics. The loss for Maryland drops it to sixth in the Big Ten standings and makes it highly unlikely they’ll be announced as a top-16 team by the Committee on Sunday. Maryland gets another tough game in College Park this weekend, taking on #25 Michigan with major stakes in the conference and national races.
Climbing:
#24 Oklahoma State Cowgirls (↑4) – Another week with a Big 12 squad taking this spot, following Baylor’s climb the week prior. After a rough loss at WVU last week, the Cowgirls jumped right back into the Big 12 race, now just a game behind the trio of TCU, Baylor, and KSU tied atop the league. OK State picked up a pair of blowout wins, including a monster result last Saturday, smashing # 7 Kansas State by 30 points in Stillwater and followed that up with a 19 point win over Arizona. Next up is the challenging mountain road swing at #84 BYU and #23 Utah, where a pair of wins should push OSU into the Top 20.
Falling:
#27 Florida State Seminoles (↓8) – FSU committed the cardinal sin in the eyes of the NET, taking two blowout losses at home. Even though losses to #19 NC State and #42 would not typically have the sky falling like this, but those losses occurred in Tallahassee and came with margins of 23 and 14 points respectively. The Seminoles have now fallen all the way to a projected 8-seed and out of the top-16 race for now, but with its final three games to close the regular season being Q1 opportunities, there is still an outside shot to climb back in with a long hot streak.
