GAME NOTES
ABOUT THE GAME
- After an open date, TCU returns to action Saturday at Utah in a 9:30 p.m. CDT game on ESPN.
- As members of the Big 12, the Horned Frogs and Utes are in the same conference for the third time. Saturday marks their first meeting since both were in the Mountain West from 2005-10. TCU and Utah were also together in the WAC (1996-98).
- The last two meetings between TCU and Utah saw ESPN’s College GameDay on site. The No. 3 Horned Frogs beat the No. 5 Utes 47-7 in Salt Lake City in 2010, after a 55-28 win for fourth-ranked TCU over No. 16 Utah in Fort Worth in 2009.
- TCU is 1-0 this season in games that start at 9:30 p.m. CDT, having won 34-27 at Stanford in the season opener.
- With its 8:30 p.m. MDT local start time, TCU and Utah will be the final game on the week 8 college football schedule.
- Going back to his days at Cal, TCU’s Sonny Dykes is 1-1 as a head coach against Utah. Dykes’ Golden Bears won 28-23 in Berkeley in 2016 after dropping a 30-24 contest in Salt Lake City in 2015.
THE DYNAMIC DUO
- Quarterback Josh Hoover ranks third in the FBS in passing yards (2,077) while tying for third in touchdown passes (16).
- Hoover is on pace to set TCU season records for completion percentage, yards and touchdown passes.
- Hoover has a nation’s-best streak of nine consecutive games with at least 20 completions and two touchdown passes. It’s the longest by a Big 12 quarterback since Oklahoma State’s Brandon Weeden from 2010-11.
- Wide receiver Jack Bech is one of just two players to rank in the top three nationally in receiving yards (3rd, 702) and touchdown catches (T-3rd, 7). He’s tied for 10th in receptions (39).
- Bech has topped 100 yards in four of six games, including a 200-yard effort against UCF that ranks third among Power Four Conference players this season.
- Bech is en route to shattering Josh Doctson’s TCU season records from 2015 for receptions, yards and touchdown catches.
SERIES HISTORY
- Utah holds a 5-3 series lead.
- TCU has won the last two meetings, 47-7 in Salt Lake City in 2010 and 55-28 in Fort Worth in 2009.
- Six of the eight meetings took place when the Horned Frogs and Utes were together in the Mountain West (2005-10).
- TCU’s first game in the MW was a 23-20 overtime victory in 2005 in Fort Worth, snapping the Utes’ 18-game winning streak.
FAMILIAR FACE
- TCU cornerback JaTravis Broughton played the previous five seasons (2019-23) at Utah.
- Broughton appeared in 47 games with 29 starts as a Ute, receiving All-Pac-12 honors.
- Broughton has started each game for TCU this season. He was named the team’s Defensive Player of the Week in the 34-27 win over Stanford, when he recorded four pass breakups which tie for the second-most by an FBS player in a game this year.
