Josh Boyce ranks Top 5 all time in every TCU receiving category, delivering some of the program’s signature moments
82 | WR Josh Boyce (2009-2012)
Few Horned Frogs have ever delivered as many MOMENTS as wide receiver Josh Boyce. The through-line connecting the Andy Dalton era, through the Casey Pachall era, into the Big 12 and Trevone Boykin era, Boyce found himself on the receiving end – quite literally – of so many iconic events during his time in Fort Worth
A Freshman All-American in 2010, the Copperas Cove native broke out with an eight reception, 127 yard, two touchdown performance in the win over BYU and exploded onto the national scene as his two first quarter touchdowns – including a 93-yard kill shot -silenced Rice-Eccles Stadium as the Frogs eviscerated No. 5 Utah Utes. With TCU completing the 2010 season undefeated and earning a spot in the Rose Bowl vs. No. 5 Wisconsin, Boyce caught a massive 44 yard pass to set up an Andy Dalton rushing touchdown as the Frogs would finally break that glass ceiling with a BCS win.
In 2011, non-AQ rival Boise State joined TCU in the Mountain West for one season before the Frogs moved to the Big 12. TCU went to Idaho to battle the undefeated No. 5 Broncos on the blue turf. Boyce was incredible all game, accumulating 163 yards and three touchdowns, but it was his final play that would elevate the day to an all-time TCU moment. After an amazing Brandon Carter TD, TCU trailed by one and Gary Patterson decided to go for two and finish off the Broncos. Boyce went in motion, caught the Pachall toss and muscled his way away from the Bronco tackler for the go-ahead points, delivering TCU a signature win and a Mountain West Title.
In TCU’s debut season in the Big 12 in 2012, Boyce led the Frogs in every receiving category with his standout game coming in West Virginia’s Milan Puskar Stadium vs. the No. 21 Mountaineers. Down a touchdown, the TCU offense was backed up inside its own 10 yard line with under two minutes to play in regulation; Trevone Boykin escaped pressure in the endzone and found Boyce wide open as the receiver sprinted past the defense for the game-tying score. But his heroics weren’t over, as the Frogs dialed up the two-point gamble, similar to the winner at Boise State. Boyce hauled in the low pass in the end zone and the Horned Frogs walked out of Morgantown with the ranked win.
In just three on-field seasons as a Horned Frog, Boyce left his mark as an all-time great TCU receiver, with his name all over the program record books. With 161 receptions, 2,535 yards, and 22 touchdowns, Boyce remains Top-5 in each category. Boyce would be drafted by the New England Patriots with the 102nd overall pick in Round 4 of the 2013 NFL Draft.
