Lifted from the bottom of the depth chart due to injuries, Ray McKown became an All-American QB, leading the Horned Frogs to a Southwest Conference Championship in 1951
49 | Quarterback/Punter/Safety Ray McKown (1951-53)
The unlikely hero of the outstanding 1951 TCU squad, Ray McKown was buried deep on the depth chart before multiple injuries saw the sophomore punter and defensive back thrust into action at Quarterback for the Horned Frogs. Trailing by 14 points to No. 6 Texas A&M, McKown delivered 20 unanswered points for the shocking comeback upset win over the Aggies. McKown’s entry to the lineup would spark a Southwest Conference Championship and a bid to the Cotton Bowl for TCU. McKown would be named an All-American and All-SWC for the 1951 season and would go on to lead TCU in passing yards, touchdowns, and punting in each of his three seasons.
