Before arriving at TCU, Tommy Joe Crutcher already a legend as one of the most heralded prep players in the country, a high school All-State and All-American at McKinney in 1959 and named to the Texas High School Hall of Fame in 2017.
Known for his unmatched speed at fullback, Crutcher would become a three-year starter for the Horned Frogs, ranking in the top-5 in the Southwest Conference for yards from scrimmage in each season, leading the conference in rush yards per attempt in 1962. Also a standout linebacker and blocking fullback in addition to his rushing skills, Crutcher played nearly every snap, ranking in the top-10 nationally in 1961. In his 1963 senior season, Crutcher rushed for 473 yards and two TDs, with 123 receiving yards to earn First Team All-SWC and First Team All-American.
Crutcher was drafted in the Third Round of the 1964 NFL Draft by the Green Bay Packers where he would win play for four seasons, winning Super Bowl I and II. He then joined the New York Giants for two years before returning to the Packers for the final two years of his pro career, playing in 108 total games.
