All-SWC running back Tony Jeffery held most of the TCU rushing records before LT
27 | RB Tony Jeffery (1984-1987)
Before LaDainain Tomlinson demolished all the TCU rushing records, it was Tony Jeffery standing alone atop the all-time running back lists in program history. Coming on the heels of Kenneth Davis’ standout career, Jeffery stepped in as a true freshman and rushed for 840 yards and nine scores. While his sophomore campaign took a relative step back with 695 yards, Jeffery bounced back in 1986. The Horned Frogs opened the season in New Orleans vs. Tulane with Jeffery dominating the day with a Southwest Conference record 343 yards and five touchdowns in the win. That season he averaged over 100 yards per game on 7.1 yards per carry with eight touchdowns. Jeffery was not even close to his ceiling yet as he went wild in his senior 1987 season, named to the Second Team All-SWC with 1,353 yards and 10 touchdowns in just 10 games. Nearly 40 years later Jeffery’s name remains among the all-time greats in Horned Frog history, ranking 2nd all-time in career rushing yards, single game rush yards, and single game touchdowns.
