Led by All-Big 12 teamer, Gustav Frimodt, the Men’s Golf team’s season provided uneven results.
The TCU Men’s Golf team competed in 11 tournaments over the past year. The season began in September when the Horned Frogs competed in the Valero Texas Collegiate in San Antonio. TCU finished second in the tournament, led by Gustav Frimodt who shot six under. After a strong start to the season, the Horned Frogs’ season hit a rough patch. TCU finished no better than 10th for seven consecutive tournaments.
Despite an uneven team effort, Frimodt led the way. The Danish senior was TCU’s top finisher for the squad’s first seven tournaments. Although Frimodt placed first in the Horned Frogs’ first tournament of the season, he shot a season-best seven under in TCU’s second tournament—the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate. Other than Frimodt, freshman Andrew Petruzelli shot under par.
TCU’s third tournament of the season, the Ben Hogan Collegiate Invitational in Fort Worth, yielded one of the squad’s worst finishes. Outside of Frimodt, the rest of the team shot over par. Coincidentally, TCU finished 15th of 15 teams in the tournament—collectively shooting 30 over. After the poor showing, TCU traveled to Hockley, Texas for a Big 12 Tournament. The sixth-seeded Horned Frogs finished eighth, after defeating Iowa State and UCF on the first day of play. TCU went on to lose the next three matches, to Baylor, Oklahoma, and finally Cincinnati.
From mid-October to late January, the Mens Golf team’s hiatus began. Upon return, the Horned Frogs competed in the Arizona NIT. In the abbreviated tournament, TCU finished 17 of 18. None of the Horned Frogs finished better than 45th individually. Following the porous showing, TCU returned to the desert to compete in the UNLV-hosted Southern Highlands Collegiate. The Horned Frogs finished 30th of 30 teams behind a substandard team showing.
Two weeks later, the Horned Frogs traveled east to Lafayette. There, TCU competed in the Louisiana Classics Invitational. TCU finished eighth of 15 teams as Frimodt shot eight under. The Horned Frogs traversed back west to take part in the Pauma Valley Invitational following an improved showing in Louisiana. Despite some momentum, TCU finished last in the California-hosted tourney. The Horned Frogs’ third tournament of the month kicked off on March 28 in San Francisco. Sans Frimodt, TCU struggled—no Horned Frog shot better than nine over.
As April began, the season wound down. The Horned Frogs competed in the Hawkeye Invitational and fared quite well. TCU finished second among 16 teams. Two sophomores, Toby Wilt and Jack Beauchamp led the way. The duo each shot one under, helping the Horned Frogs finish in the top two for the first time since early September.
Riding high off of an impressive performance in Iowa, the Horned Frogs struggled mightily in the Big 12 Championship. Although Frimodt tied for first, the rest of the team finished 39th or worse. Frimodt was the only Horned Frog to compete in the NCAA Regionals in May. The senior finished 20th after a strong start. He completed the tournament tied 20th at one over. The senior golfer finished his TCU career as a two-time Big 12 All-Tournament team recipient. Frimodt also participated in the NCAA Regionals three times.
The Horned Frogs finished second at the National Golf Invitational to end the season. The squad shot a season-best 22 under through the three-day event. Beauchamp led the way, behind a solid individual effort. The sophomore shot eleven under in the event—just four shots behind the tournament winner.
TCU’s Frimodt earned PING Third-Team All-American Honors in addition to making the All-Big 12 Conference Team. Although Frimodt’s career ends, the Horned Frogs will have several returning quality contributors. Beauchamp and Wilt will lead TCU into the 2024-25 season.
