
Police sources told a DFW television station that Armstrong hit a woman with a gun after an argument.
Dallas Mavericks assistant coach Darrell Armstrong was arrested early Saturday morning and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, according to a report from Dallas-Fort Worth news station WFAA
Dallas police arrested Armstrong, 56, and was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, stemming from an incident at 3:45 Saturday morning, according to WFAA, which first reported the news early Sunday afternoon. The Mavericks assistant of nine-plus seasons was in an argument with a woman and allegedly hit her with a gun and threatened to shoot her, according to the report, which cited sources within the department.
Armstrong’s bond was set at $35,000, according to Dallas County court records. He had been released from jail at the time of this writing.
The team reportedly issued the following statement to WFAA:
The Dallas Mavericks are aware of an incident involving a member of our staff and are gathering all relevant information surrounding the incident. We take this matter seriously. The employee has been placed on administrative suspension pending the outcome of legal proceedings. This matter is currently under review by the appropriate legal authorities. Due to this fact, we will allow the legal process to run its course, and we will refrain from further comment while proceedings are ongoing.
KDFW also received the statement from the team.

Dallas Hoops Journal confirmed the report and added that Dallas Fire and Rescue treated the victim at the scene.

Armstrong joined the Mavericks coaching staff in the 2008-2009 season after a 14-year playing career that included stints with the Orlando Magic, New Orleans Hornets, Indiana Pacers, New Jersey Nets, and the Mavericks. He played in the 2006 NBA Finals with the Mavs. He won the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year and Most Improved Players awards in 1999.
Armstrong was previously arrested on charges of driving while intoxicated in Gastonia, N.C. in 2023, according to the Queen City News. During his playing days, he was arrested on non-sufficient funds charges in Los Angeles in 2012, according to ESPN, stemming from an incident where he allegedly passed a bad check in Las Vegas. Before that, in 2003, he was arrested in Orlando on charges of battery of a law enforcement officer and resisting arrest, according to a separate report from the network.
