Less than a week after the shocking trade that sent him to the Dallas Mavericks, big man Anthony Davis suffered a groin injury in his debut with the team. Unfortunately for Davis and the Mavericks, he will miss multiple weeks because of the injury. However, NBA insider Marc Stein recently gave an update on Davis’ recovery that should make Mavericks fans feel a bit better.
According to Stein, there is “tangible optimism” that Davis will not require surgery.
“A firm treatment course and projected recovery timetable have still yet to be announced by the Mavericks … but there has been tangible optimism in Dallas this week that Anthony Davis (adductor strain) can avoid the surgical route,” Stein tweeted.
Additionally, Stein also said the Mavericks “will be cautious” during Davis’ recovery and that there is no concrete return timetable yet.
One source briefed on Anthony Davis’ recovery tells @TheSteinLine that no specific recovery timetable has yet been established beyond the determination that the Mavericks and Davis “will be cautious” in pinpointing a return date.
Before his injury, Davis looked great for the Mavericks. In his first game with the team, he recorded 31 points, 16 rebounds, seven assists, and three blocks.

Anthony Davis Will Not Play in the All-Star Game
Earlier this year, Davis (then with the Los Angeles Lakers) earned an All-Star nod. This is the 10th selection of his career. However, because of the injury, he is unable to play in the game this year. Instead, his teammate Kyrie Irving was named his replacement. This is Irving’s ninth selection and first since the 2022-23 season.

This season, Irving is averaging 24.6 points, 4.8 rebounds, 4.8 assists, and 1.3 steals per game. With Luka Doncic now in Los Angeles, Irving will take on a bigger role for the Mavericks the rest of the way.
The Last Word On the Dallas Mavericks
The Mavericks have been hit with the injury bug in a big way recently. In addition to Davis, Daniel Gafford, P.J. Washington, Dwight Powell, and Dereck Lively II are all on the injury report for Dallas. Fortunately for them, they have just one game against the Miami Heat before the All-Star break is here. This will give them time to rest and recover as they prepare for a push in the second half.
Currently, Dallas is 29-26 and owns the No. 8 seed in the Western Conference. If the season ended today, they would be in the Play-In tournament. However, they are just 5.5 games behind the No. 4 seed Houston Rockets.
There is a lot of basketball remaining, but the Mavericks are still looking to finish the season strong to ensure a postseason appearance. After making the NBA Finals last year, this season has not gone exactly the way Mavericks fans were hoping. However, once they get healthy again, the Mavericks will have the chance to showcase how dominant they could be even after the Doncic trade.
