Doncic’s most recent criticism came from former Lakers player and current radio broadcaster Michael Cooper. He praised Doncic’s ability to score the ball, but had some interesting critiques of both his physical stature and his game, via his Showtime podcast: “Luka [Dončić] gives you that triple-double almost about every night, but he’s too slow for me. If he wasn’t a scorer, I would cut him. I give him credit for that, but to me, he’s lazy. Doesn’t hustle back on defense.”

Interestingly, Ben Simmons is among the six most popular players on one of the big social media outlets, Douyin, which is akin to TikTok. The only players in front of him are James Harden, Keldon Johnson of the Spurs, Luka Doncic of the Mavericks and Klay Thompson of the Warriors, one of the most popular players in China. Why Simmons? It was his support of an NBA Cares initiative to bring basketball courts to rural China. Working with the Nets, Simmons donated a basketball court in rural China, which is an NBA priority. It was a big hit, noted Mailman, leading to 4.2 million video views and 4.2 million reads on social media. Two companies Tsai is a big part of — Alibaba and Alipay — also teamed with NBA China to set up a fantasy league (Alibaba) and Chinese New Year celebrations (Alipay) where NBA stars offer their New Year’s wishes. -via NetsDaily / August 14, 2024
Scoop B: Recently Bronny James was drafted by the Lakers. What was your thought when you saw that? Cooper: I think that is one of the greatest things to happen. First, LeBron James, his father, has done so much for the game of basketball, now. He is the first player to ever play with his son and why not do it in a Laker uniform? Scoop B: People give him hell about nepotism. Why do you think people go so hard at LeBron? Cooper: When you’re that good, people try to find little knicks and knacks about you. But this is not about nepotism at all. It’s about drafting a young player that will definitely help the Lakers in the long run and he just happens to have the last name, James. -via YouTube / August 16, 2024
Scoop B: Now that you’re going to be in [Hall of fame] is there any other of your cohorts in the Lakers purple and gold that you’d also like to see being inducted? Cooper: Of course. I think Byron Scott, Norm Nixon should definitely be in there, hopefully they will be considered there in the future. Robert Horry, one of the players. You know what I found out that the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame isn’t about what you did on the court most of the time; it is but it’s your contribution to the game. Giving back to the game in any form or fashion. -via YouTube / August 16, 2024
