Derrick Jones Jr.’s decision to change agents this week has complicated the hopes of the Dallas Mavericks of re-signing him this offseason. Jones signed with Rich Paul of Klutch Sports as his new agent. There is a 15-day wait period per NBPA guidelines after an agent change, which means he would not have representation until July 11. Jones was previously represented by Aaron Turner.
The Mavericks have subsequently agreed to sign Naji Marshall using a significant portion of the midlevel exception. The Mavericks are also pursuing a sign-and-trade agreement with the Golden State Warriors for Klay Thompson.
Jones is now considered unlikely to be retained by the Mavericks.
Marc Stein reports that the Los Angeles Clippers could emerge with interest in signing Jones.
