Officially, Mark Cuban is no longer the owner of the Dallas Mavericks, having sold his majority stake in the team a while back. But for the longest time it was believed that he still had a management role with the team. One NBA insider might be pouring cold water on that notion.
Appearing on The Pat McAfee Show, NBA insider Brian Windhorst said that it’s likely Cuban was there but since he wasn’t “front and center,” it felt like he wasn’t.
“First off, he was very distant throughout this playoff run. I think part of that is because we’re used to seeing him front and center,” Windhorst said, via the New York Post. “He did get like $2.7 billion [for the stake in the team he sold]. He still holds a percentage of the team but I think he walked away with like $2.7 billion cash in his bank account, so I don’t feel sorry for him.”
Windhorst explained that Cuban currently has a “really weird” role with the team now, possibly referring to himself as “Mavericks proprietor” and that the team should consider getting rid of that role.
“But I think the title that he has, and think about the workshopping that went into this, I think his title is ‘Mavericks proprietor,’ which is really weird and I think they should get rid of. I don’t know what it means,” Windhorst said.
Cuban owned the Mavericks since 2000 and it was under his ownership that the team reached and won their first-ever NBA Championship in 2011.
