Klay Thompson made history on Christmas Day against the Timberwolves
Klay Thompson passed Reggie Miller for 5th all-time in career 3-pointers Wednesday afternoon in the Dallas Mavericks’ Christmas Day matchup against the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Thompson hit the shot that moved him past Miller with just under nine minutes in the fourth quarter against the Wolves, his third made three of the game at the time.
Thompson has long been one of the deadliest shooters in NBA history. Paired with Steph Curry in Golden State, Thompson became part of the best shooting back court in NBA history during his time with the Warriors. The Splash Brothers redefined 3-point shooting and influenced play across the entire league.
Moving to Dallas didn’t dampen Thompson’s shot from behind the arc. He’s shot 39 percent from deep this year, a bit off of his career mark of 41 percent. But it’s slightly better than his 3-point shooting his last season with the Golden State Warriors, when he hit 38 percent of his nine 3-point attempts per game.
Thompson will undoubtably make a lot more shots from deep, but moving up the leaderboard in career threes will be difficult. Damian Lillard is a little more than a hundred ahead of him, and then after that, Ray Allen lays quite a bit beyond that with 2,973 3-pointers made. The top two on the list, Curry and James Harden, respectively, both have more than three thousand made threes and will continue to add to their totals for a few more years.
Wherever he ends up on the list, Thompson has become one of the most prolific and iconic shooters in NBA history. He may not top Curry to become number one, but when discussions about the greatest 3-point shooters of all-time comes up, Thompson will be among the first few names mentioned.
