Jerry Jones might have woken up with a reason to smile today, and it has nothing to do with football.
The entire sports world has been rocked by the Dallas Mavericks’ shocking trade of superstar guard Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers. Doncic, a 26-year-old perennial All-Star is heading to LA along with Maxi Kleber and Markieff Morris in exchange for All-Star big man Anthony Davis, Max Christie and the Lakers’ 2029 first-round pick. The trade, which broke after midnight on Sunday, sent shockwaves through the NBA and other sports as well.
Angry Mavericks fans have been inundating owner Miriam Adelson and general manager Nico Harrison with vitriol online, which is where Jones comes in. The longtime Cowboys owner and de facto GM has been taking heat this offseason for, among other things, his team’s lengthy championship drought and bizarre head coaching search that led to the hiring of career assistant Brian Schottenheimer.
Now, the heat in the DFW area is off Jones, for the time being at least, leading many people on social media to crack a joke about how relieved the owner of America’s Team is .
“The real winner in the Luka for AD trade: Jerry Jones. He is no longer the worst Dallas owner. Congrats Mr. Jones!” said BetOnline’s Dave Mason.
“Jerry Jones this morning, realizing he’s no longer on the bottom rung of general managers that Dallas sports fans love to hate,’ said Cowboys writer David Moore of the Dallas Morning News.
“THE TORCH HAS BEEN PASSED JERRY JONES IS NO LONGER THE WORST GM IN DALLAS, THE CURSE HAS BEEN LIFTED,” a Cowboys fan account said.
“Jerry Jones might no longer be the most hated man in Dallas,” another person said.
“Jerry Jones somehow no longer the worst GM in Dallas,” a fifth commenter added.
The impact of this trade is still being processed by basketball fans, players, coaches and media. It probably still won’t be fully grasped for a while.
Right now though, no one can understand what the Mavericks seem to be thinking.
Time will tell if they knew something others didn’t or will look as foolish as many expect.
