One member of Jason Kidd’s coaching staff has reportedly walked out the door in solidarity with Luka Doncic following the team’s decision to trade him to the Los Angeles Lakers.
According to longtime NBA writer Marc Stein, Mavs assistant Marko Milic has decided to leave Dallas in the wake of the shocking move. Noting, “Milic was the first Slovenian to play in the NBA and, I’m told, did not wish to stay with the Luka-less Mavericks.”
Milic joined the franchise ahead of the 2022-23 season after spending time with the Basketball Federation of Slovenia — which included seven years of coaching following a decorated playing career.
The 47-year-old was drafted by the Philadelphia 76ers in the second round of the 1997 NBA Draft before spending two years with the Suns and ultimately transitioning back overseas.
His professional basketball career spanned seven different countries and his number is retired by Union Olimpija in his homeland of Slovenia.
His exit is just the latest in a string of fallouts since the Mavs decided to move on from their five-time All-NBA superstar.
Fans in Dallas are still unbelievably hurt by Nico Harrison’s decision and the organization has even gone as a far as issuing refunds to season ticket holders who’ve decided to cancel their plans since Doncic’s exit.
It’s been a long time since a trade was this poorly received by a fan base and it’ll be interesting to see how it unfolds if the Mavericks aren’t able to deliver championship in their limited window with Kyrie Irving and Anthony Davis.
