With the 2023-24 NBA season officially over, Colin Cowherd believes the Dallas Mavericks must consider getting Luka Doncic a new co-star.
Cowherd doesn’t view Kyrie Irving as the perfect No. 2 option for the Mavericks. Some of his concerns about the outspoken guard were validated during the NBA Finals.
So, who does Cowherd view as the “perfect” teammate next to Doncic? The FS1 radio host thinks Paul George would be the best possible addition to the Mavericks.
“I think literally a perfect player for Luka is Paul George,” Cowherd said. “Probably, privately, doesn’t want the final shot – Luka does. Excellent defender, long, willing to give you 30 in non-pressure situations. He can have nights where Luka can almost take a backseat. But in the big moments, Paul sometimes takes weird shots.”
George is set to be a free agent this offseason. While he would be an intriguing fit for the Mavericks, he might be out of their price range.
Teams with more cap space than the Mavericks could make a run at George in free agency. The Philadelphia 76ers, for example, would be a great landing spot for the All-Star swingman. Not only do they have a need at small forward, they have over $50 million in projected cap space.
If the Mavericks want to make a run at George, they’d need to get very creative with their payroll.
