What to Watch for as the Mavericks take on the Grizzlies in their First Preseason Game
Our beloved Dallas Mavericks return to the court Monday evening to take on the Memphis Grizzlies at the American Airlines Center. Although details regarding what players we’ll see lace up for the 7:00 PM game remain scarce, we can be pretty certain of two things: Luka Doncic is unlikely to play due to a recent calf injury, and Dante Exum will most certainly be out due to a wrist injury.
In their stead, expect to see a lot of young guards on the court this game. This team will normally have a lot of backcourt depth, so here are three things to watch for during this preseason premier.
A Golden Debut?
Already a legendary figure in the game, Klay looks to pen the next chapter in his fabled career in a Maverick uniform. Monday night could be the night he makes his debut for our squad. Given the success of the last two men to wear number 31 for the Mavs, here’s hoping Klay’s tenure with the Mavericks will be as fruitful as the Nick the Quick and the JET.
How Will Brandon Williams perform?
Speaking of the JET, if Brandon Williams hopes to follow in the footsteps of his fellow 6’1” Arizona Alum, he’ll have to earn his spot on the roster first. A good showing this preseason could go a long way in doing so. As a sparkplug for the Magic last preseason, Williams averaged nearly 12 points and shot %50 from three. Let’s hope he demonstrates more of the same for a Mavericks preseason squad with plenty of guard depth.
Jaden’s Time to Shine?
With Luka and Dante out, and Kyrie and Spencer being seasoned vets, Jaden Hardy should have ample opportunity to show why he deserves to be the first guard off the bench this season. At age 22, Hardy is entering his third year in the NBA and is poised to be a Restricted Free Agent next year. Look to him to establish his worth early and often this year – hopefully starting with this preseason game.
Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff
Above all else, the key to preseason basketball is to get through these games in good health. Following last year’s bittersweet season, MFFLs of all people should recognize that preseason is for the most part meaningless. With that said, let’s go Mavs.
How to Watch
In the words of Big E — it’s a New Day! Local MFFLs can watch virtually all Mavs games this year on either WFAA Channel 8 or KMPX Channel 29.
